Introduction
This report presents a summary of the implementation of Activity 3.1.1.3 under the RICOWAS Project, as contained in SLARI’s work plan for 2025. The activity involved the production of communication materials, including documents, videos, radio shows, and maps. It was implemented by the Communication and Knowledge Management Unit (CKMU) to enhance the visibility of SLARI, promote research outputs, and strengthen engagement with agricultural stakeholders across Sierra Leone.
Knowledge and awareness material production can be done through a web-based platform, published documents, videos, radio shows, posters, exchange visits, personal outreach and more. Knowledge products can include updates on project progress, farmer stories, lessons learned, technical fact sheets and manuals, and other materials to explain and illustrate climate change issues as they affect the rice sector in Sierra Leone. Presentation formats can be tailored to different audiences: farmers, policymakers, program developers, research and technical staff, and the public.
Objectives
The main objectives of the activity were to
- Increase awareness and visibility of RICOWAS, SLARI’s research and innovations through media engagement.
- Produce and disseminate relevant communication materials such as videos, reports, fact sheets, and maps.

Implementation Process
The implementation of Activity 3.1.1.3 began with RICOWAS approval of no-objection and also approval of a budget request submitted on 29th April 2025 and 15th August 2025. Upon approval, the communication and knowledge management unit (CKMU), SLARI, coordinated with professional media teams to develop and produce the planned outputs. The process included:
- Development of technical reports and fact sheets highlighting key research outcomes.
- Production of high-quality documentary videos showcasing SLARI’s ongoing work under RICOWAS.
- Organization of a live radio discussion at 98.1 FM to engage the public and share SLARI’s agricultural innovations including SRI-CRRP.
Key Achievements
The following key achievements were recorded during the implementation of the activity:
- A documentary video was successfully produced, highlighting SLARI’s innovations and success stories from the RICOWAS project.
- Live radio discussions were conducted on 98.1 FM, providing a platform for knowledge sharing and public engagement.
- Technical reports, fact sheets, and maps were developed and shared with stakeholders to improve information access.
- The activity increased SLARI’s visibility, improved stakeholder engagement, and promoted agricultural best practices (RICOWAS).
Challenges
Some challenges encountered during implementation included:
- Limited time for video editing and finalization due to tight project timelines.
- Logistical difficulties in accessing remote sites for filming and data collection.
Lessons Learned
Several lessons were learned during this activity:
- Early planning and coordination are critical for the smooth execution of communication activities.
- Engaging professional media teams ensures higher-quality outputs and wider reach.
