Scaling Up Climate Resilient Rice Production in West Africa (RICOWAS)
Scaling Up Climate Resilient Rice Production in West Africa (RICOWAS) is a project implemented in 13 West African countries of which Sierra Leone is a beneficiary.Â
Implemented by the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS) in collaboration with CNS-RIZ, CORAF and Cornnel University in America and it is financed by the Adaptation Fund (AF).
The RICOWAS project was approved by the AF on October 21, 2021 during the 37th session of its Board of Directors. Administration and launched in Mali on January 18, 2023 with the aim to improve the resilience to climate change and increase the productivity of smallholder rice systems in West Africa using a climate-resilient rice production (CRRP) approach, capitalizing on the achievements of the SRI-WAAPP regional project “Improving and scaling up the System of Rice Intensification (SRI ) in west Africa.

Enhance Rice Yields: Implement SRI and CRRP practices to increase rice yields, ensuring a consistent and sufficient supply to meet local demand and contribute to food security.
Sustainable Agriculture Practices: Introduce and promote sustainable agricultural practices, focusing on reduced resource utilization, environmental conservation, and organic farming principles.
Empower Farmers: Foster active participation and decision-making among farmers through on-farm approach, enabling them to fully own and be engage in the project.
